Here's an example of how it works:
If you intend to drive to work all year, lets say 12,000 miles and you get
20 miles per gallon in your car, you will burn 600 gallons of
gas.
Each gallon of gas contains 114,100 btu's of energy. That is equivalent
to 16.3 lbs of good burning wood according to the chart below (114,100 ÷ 7,000).

So, here's the breakdown. If you are going to drive 12,000 miles
in a year using 600 gallons of gas, you will require (600gls. x
114,100btus= 68.5 million btus. or 9,780 lbs of wood or 2.6
cords of firewood including air space in the stack.
One cord of wood, 128 cu.ft. weighs about 3,800 lbs wet.
One cord of red pine weighs 3,800 lbs.
One cord of white oak weighs 3,800 lbs.
Imagine the CO2 that will be absorbed by the equivalent of
one cord of living wood! Now THAT's an offset!
